About Kosterskärgården National Park

Established in 2009, Kosterskärgården National Park encompasses a group of islands and skerries in the outer Bohuslän archipelago on Sweden’s west coast near the town of Strömstad. The park protects approximately 3,755 hectares of largely marine and coastal habitats, including diverse shallow waters, rocky island shores, and coastal meadows. The islands' geology, with granite and gneiss formations, creates varied landscapes with narrow inlets and winding waterways. The park is notable for its rich biodiversity, including seabird colonies, seals, and rare plants specialized to the harsh island environment. Kosterskärgården offers famous opportunities for kayaking and boating across calm, sheltered waters and features well-marked trails on the larger islands such as Kosteröarna where visitors can hike and explore cultural heritage sites that showcase traditional fishing settlements. The park also serves as a key research area for marine life and conservation efforts in Sweden. Recreational activities focus on low-impact outdoor exploration, including guided birdwatching tours, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and seasonal wildlife viewing. The lack of large-scale infrastructure contributes to the park’s wild character, making it a destination especially popular among nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquility and connection with marine environments.
